PERSONAL IDENTITY

This project challenged me to think of how I would love to be perceived.  My personal identity can convey important information that can be mundane in a way that displays my style and likes to invite people in.

FIRST SET OF DESIGNS

After looking on Pinterest at ways other brand themselves in their personal identity, I saw a lot of initials and that's something I didn't have an interest in designing because of the mirror reflection of J and L, so I tried to think something different.  I like how short and concise j.lim was.  Because my name is on the longer side, I liked seeing something on the shorter side.

The black and white script design was something I lettered.  It was my attempt in experimenting with hand lettering as it's something I really enjoy looking at, especially the copious amount of hand lettering Instagram accounts.

The blue watercolor design was me challenging myself to not gravitate to the dark, monochromatic colors I always go to.  A very light and airy design that represented me was something new.  Majority of days, I'm wearing black (making it a point to wear more color in 2018!).  The watercolor effect keeps the design light-hearted.  I also made an attempt at incorporating my initials.

The blue and gold script design was me putting my liking of monochromatic designs with blue and script.  I also was looking to include geometric elements into the design.

SECOND SET OF DESIGNS

A week had passed since the first set and I got plenty of help from class critiques.  One design was dropped and the rest were refined.  I decided to drop the black and white script because while I love black and white, I wanted to bring more life into my design, trying to find the best way to present myself, as I am.

I elaborated on the blue watercolor by removing the JL and bleeding the watercolor to all four sides.  It keeps the design on the more simpler side.  The boxes didn't add much value to the design so those were removed as well.

The blue and gold script turned into a teal script.  Teal is one of my favorite color and think fits me well as it's mellow and relaxing.  It's muted so while I'm happy to incorporate color, it's on the subtle side.  Rather than having the black and white as my geometric element, I left it on the back as a pattern.  In the end, this is the design I choice.  I believe it best represents myself with the creative and free flowing script, calm teal color and modern geometric back design.

After this project, I altered it from j.lim to Jacqueline Lim, as what you see on my resume and this site, for sake of convenience but also preventing repetition of my mark, j.lim and making sure to provide my full name.
